Nutrition Ratings

Driven by our team of expert Registered Dietitians, nutrition ratings are calculated by leveraging data science, evidence-based nutrition information and machine learning to rate foods on a simple scale from 1 to 100. The more nutritious the food, the higher the nutrition rating. To check nutrition ratings as you shop, simply look for the nutrition information on each product page. You can use nutrition ratings to quickly compare similar products and add better-for-you items.

Kroger brand quinoa has an OptUP™ Nutrition Rating of 82

How is Food Rated?

OptUP™ analyzes the food label, including the ingredients, to calculate a product’s nutrition rating. Ratings are based on 100g of solid food or 240ml of beverage.

Ratings tend to increase when foods contain more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Ratings tend to decrease when foods contain more added sugar, sodium, calories, and saturated fats.

Aim for an OptUP™ Score above 600

Our nutrition rating system classifies products as red, yellow or green options to help you balance your cart and find more nutritious foods faster. Our team of expert Registered Dietitians recommend aiming for an OptUP™ score above 600 to help guide balanced eating. Some of the items you want may be in the red category; save that portion of your cart for the things you really love. Strive for choices that are better for you in the green category when you’re willing to be more flexible and try new things.
