How to Make Simple Syrup
What is simple syrup?
Simple syrup is a sweetener used in drinks, cooking and baking. It’s made of equal parts sugar and water, but can also be jazzed up with fresh fruit and herbs.
1. Bring water and sugar to a boil: Add equal parts water and sugar to a saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then remove from heat.
2. Add some flavor: Strawberries, blueberries, mint and basil are delightful additions — simply add to the water-sugar mixture and simmer over medium heat for 7–10 minutes before removing from heat. If using fruit, it’s a good idea to smash the fruit before simmering to get more flavor out of it.
3. Let cool: If you’ve added berries or herbs, strain the mixture after removing from heat. Once the simple syrup cools, it’s ready to use. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
